Case Study: From Heritage Organic Farm to GMP‑Ready Cannabis Processing (New York)

Overview

New York requires adult‑use (and medical‑use) cannabis products to be processed in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards, tied to 21 CFR Part 111 or Part 117 depending on product type. Licensees must maintain GMP standards during operations, and critically must submit proof of a qualified third‑party GMP audit within one year of commencing operations (with limited conditional exemptions for certain license types/activities). 

For this client, GMP wasn’t a “nice to have.” It was a countdown clock in order to keep their license in good standing.

The challenge: the client wasn’t starting from a blank-slate facility. They were an organic outdoor farm expanding into cannabis processing using existing farm infrastructure, spaces that were functional for agriculture, but not designed for controlled manufacturing.
